For much more than 40 yrs, the U.S.S. Sequoia was considered “the floating White Property.” Now, she is withering ashore as a contentious lawful struggle wages around the yacht’s rightful owner and who really should spend to repair service it. Paula Reid reports.

  2. It's not a 'ship' in the sense of an ocean-going vessel, Herbert Hoover's fishing for billfish notwithstanding. She's more of a river barge. Every system aboard is obsolete. No one would build a yacht that size out of timber today; it would be aluminum.

  5. I agree with the lady, tax payers should not pay for their pleasure. But it is a historical yacht, so the Historical Society should buy it and put it on display.

  9. If they can bring back older ships from the 1700's, this oen shouldn't be a problem. Just getting through the legal battle. That wasn't explained too well here.

  11. Buy one less un-needed fighter plane and it could be restored in primo fashion. Oh and shoot a few government attorneys for good measure.

  12. Amazing how pieces of our history rot away, because no one cares. Once lawyers/courts are involved though, the rotting process moves even faster because courts are so slow, glacier slow……..

  15. You think this is sad, and it is, but take a moment to look at the SS United States. Now that's another horrid story of a national treasure wasting away. Or should I say rusting away.

  16. Set fire to it and have a big, festive bonfire. If you want a really big fire, set fire to the money it's going to take to restore it.

  17. Ridiculous to move it north to restore it, there are talented shipwrights who could stay in VA to do this work in more favorable conditions. I used to see this grand boat on the Potomac and docked in DC years ago, what a terrible shame to see how this legal dispute has caused this beautiful boats decay… It is a living piece of history.

  21. It would cost a couple of million to repair it and about a million a year to run it. It's not a necessity and enough Americans resent the Pres. et al for what they have so I'd pass on it.

  33. Mar-a-lago used to be owned by the federal government as a presidential retreat. Nixon didn't like going there and the annual maintenance was +$1 million, so it was sold. Guess who bought it.
