We Crashed A Luxury Super Yacht (Captain&#39s Vlog ninety five)





It was a unhappy ending to a great working day on the drinking water.   1. Go with your gut. You recognized there was a potential issue as you were first sizing up the spot, but you didn’t act on it. After 40 years in a high risk career, one of the fundamental things I learned was to listen to that voice inside that says a situation is not good.

    Not being critical, it happens to all of us. Stuff happens. As you point out, no one was hurt and the damage is repairable. While we would like to be perfect, mistakes happen. The most important issue is to learn from the first

  3. Up on seeing an obstacle like that you should have refused to dock untill the harbor master cleared the way. shame on you . you are fully responsible. that's what you get for being cocky about the honers you received in a prior video. it will bite you in the ass every time!!

  4. You saw it as soon as you made your turn to line up. Yes, you should have had the harbor Masters drop the line. That being said. The Harbor master should not allowed the line placed as it was. That's on them. The other captain should not have encroached on the other slip as he did. ( Professional etiquette).
    And as others have mentioned in these comments they just keep packing you guys in tighter and tighter….Big thumbs up to you for posting this.
    I can hear the aggravation in your voice, your pissed at yourself. If you had it to do over again you would have held your position and got on the radio.
    You paid for that slip, tell the HM to do his job and clear it so you can pull in…it could have been so much worse if something gave way and hit someone like you said. 👍

  5. You where taking it safe and slow, as you should have. However, that port bow line running right into your berth is ridiculous, and the harbor master should know it. Your only fault is trying to be nice to everyone and it got your burned. I know, I know, you have to be diplomatic because you don't want to send wake, however, as you said, you're the master of the vessel. I don't believe it forward nor presumptuous demand to have that bow line dropped. You're correct in asserting that the harbor master should have seen the problem and taken care of it PRIOR to you entering port as that's their JOB. Anyone can clearly see, even a novice, that the line was clearly in the way considering the size of the berth. It would be one thing if the berth on starboard was empty, as you could have just walked her to port until you where in the berth after backing up.

    One good thing BECAUSE of this video, this harbor, as well as others, will be FORCED to take corrective action PRIOR to mooring. I really can't believe this is the first time this has happened, however, thankfully, because of YOUR video, other captains, and dock masters, will address this issue to prevent further damage. I am sorry for the damage to Awol, however, the damage is minimal, with zero injuries. Imagine if one of those fender lines parted as she came around or if the stress ripped the gunwale.

  7. We admire your honest character and intergity as a captain, even when faced with unpleasant circumstances. With docking spaces critical, the harbor master should insist that his crew strive for precise alignments which, in this event, looked less than desirable, and you had to squeeze into what was left.
    It isn't just an event, but how one handles it afterward. You have our admiration and respect, as does your owner.

  9. Since you decided to mavouver the boat around the ground line, you sould have also put an observer at the starboard side or to make the mavouver from the starboard side to have the view by your self. Thanks for the lesson Captain!! Wish you all the best!

  10. As a responsible professional, your feeling of disappointment is understandable. It is a learning lesson from which new procedures will be developed and trained. Then you can move on. Personally, I would not have parked a party barge in such a small space. The fact you did not have to grease the sides of AWOL to get it in there is amazing.

  11. Hi Tristan, first of all kuddos on the willingness to share this vid and explain in detail what happened. I am just a sailing boat skipper with a couple of years on the sea, so not trying to teach you anything, but you are correct that that bow line should have been dropped while you dock. Also, what my instructors at the RYA taught me is that that if I am not 100% happy with the situation, just stop, think about it, if necessary make a new plan and only when fully confident, then proceed. I think that the cramped conditions at the dock also were a factor in this. As you and everyone else said, everyone's ok and that's what matters. The rest will polish out 😉

  18. You need to run through your docking check lists. Add other boat's docking lines to the start of the check list. Never let someone make you fail. If something is wrong, no matter whose fault it is, have it changed before docking. Love the vlogs. Good luck

  19. That's not entirely your fault. If you were you touching fenders on both sides, tats an issue. Nothing really could have fixed it. There's just more and more yachts with bigger size with a dock that can only fit so many yachts.

  22. It is a shame that you had to experience this mishap, were there guests on board when this happened. I'm sure the noise of all that was going on was startling to hear. That is why they are called accidents and what insurance is for, Glad everyone is alright and no personal injuries.

  23. Glad everyone is OK…But as a Former Boat owner, That Harbormaster should Lighten up on the Packing job….TOO Close to each other…If I was a RICH man PAYING that Much to have a Slip, I would want a LITTLE More room!!!

  24. Thanks for sharing this, Capt. The reality is they try to maximize revenue by cramming as many vessels as possible at the docks, resulting in very difficult — some would say nigh impossible — expectations of maneuverability for their client crews. It seems this industry does draw upon the best skill available — and some measure of pride on your part is perfectly reasonable — but even the best cannot operate at 100% all the time. The harbor master and ship to your starboard put you in a difficult situation, and they as well as you have something to learn from this. Naturally, you rightly take responsibility as the master of the moving vessel: that is part of the job, and correct. However, responsibility and fault are not exactly synonymous. It seems like you handled yourself well afterward, which is the test of leader. At the end of the day, everyone is fine. Don't let this get you down. Great boss.

  25. don't blame yourself, and don't feel bad. that is what insurance is for. for the money marinas charge for spots, there should be more space for docking. if there were poles at the bow, and not dropping anchor or tying off to a mooring, at the bow, there would be more room to back in and dock. what would i have done, i would of asked for a larger space. your the captain, i am a novice, so i would never try a spot that tight. have your chase boat take plenty of pictures from the front of the boat, and send them to the owner, so he can send them to the insurance company, and let insurance decide if they want to go after the marina for their spacing arrangements. just look at the space that the sailboat on your port side had.

  28. Such situations often arise when we have a little too much confidence in ourselves.Because we have carried out a certain maneuver 1000 times without problems, it does not mean that things cant go wrong.
    I have been sailing for forty years, and I regularly have moments where I think, I should do that a little differently the next time 🙂

  29. All is well, You guys do a great job. I miss being out there on the water. I think I would have tempted to get in there also. Never like to inconvenience another captain to drop lines if you dont have to. But I think your right the dock master should have told him to drop it. The boat still looks good as ever.

  31. The Harbor Master should have dropped that line clearing the way for you to dock. I am surprised your stern eyes did not notice that so you could have aborted until they dropped the lines.

  32. That little voice in your head said before you even started docking look at that line if anything make sure you listen to your gut especially when you're responsible for x amount of souls on board very minor damage but I'm sure you could avert a major disaster in future with this experience

  36. Yes, you should have told him to drop the line…unfortunately you are the captain and the resposibility lies with you…..what if something bad happened?
    But you are young and you will learn and this will make you better.

  37. Dont let this get to you Tristan. You have amazing boat handling skills! That ground line should have been dropped (by order from the dockmaster) before you lined up to the berth.

  39. There as nothing reckless I could discern. You identified the hazard in the ground line in advance and you were clearly making die allowance for it.

    That it would play out as a hazard in a most unusual way (springing the boat off the fenders) is just unfortunate.

    Bear in mind also when something like this happens, it happens rarely compared with the thousands of times you successfully navigate all hazards.

    And we’ve all done it, usually much worse than that.

  41. The problem is that these Marina's cram multi million dollar yachts together. They don't control things like ground lines as they should. When I first saw you backing into that slip I was thinking it was an awfully tight space . They should have a required distance between yachts but I guess greed wins out over safety. Don't lose any sleep over this Tristan. You are an excellent Captain with an excellent crew.

  42. I teach advanced driving, cars and motorbikes and trailer towing. One thing I always say to my students is " If in doubt bottle out " Easy to remember and very important. Easy to comment post event but clearly as you approached there was doubt in your mind given the position of the rope from the other vessel. I would say in future trust your first judgement of a situation and act accordingly. Your comments re the incident are spot on. Frustration shows and your pride is hurt. Great site and AWOL looks fantastic. I plan on winning the lottery soon and booking a charter with you !! Keep up the blog.

  43. @8:25 you asked what I would of done differently? I wouldn't of tried to back in there. I'm gonna be a mean guy today, so my apologies in advance, but sir, you took 15 minutes to explain that you screwed up and decided to play bumper boats. We learn here in America while playing bumper boats at 8 years old, certain things just dont fit in between other things. Just start doing pushups until I get tired. Dont dock like that again or your fired.

  44. We have an acronym in truck driving: G.O.A.L., Get Out And Look. Basically it means if you need to check your clearance while backing into a spot a million times, do it. If you have to do a million pull ups to reset your backing position, do it. And if a truck on the right side of yours has his nose cut in close to your spot, ask if he can move. You've come to the most important lesson through this accident… if you don't like something, ask to change it so you can do your job successfully! Finally, Tristan, I think you're an amazing Captain! You back a vessel almost twice the size of the ones I used to drive. Huge props to you!!!

  45. I wouldn't worry about what other people would have done different as there are far too many armchair capatains out there. You can only learn from experience and you made you best decision at the time and that is all that matters. Dont reflect on it and just move on and chalk it down to experience. You have shown you are a good capatain & Master and thats what matters. Carry on as you have always done safe in the knowledge that "Shit Happens" and you will be ok.
