OH SHIP! There Goes the Engine || Sailing Rangiroa Tuamotu French Polynesia
Our Tikehau Anchorage has turned to crap and undesirable climate is coming. So we are sailing to Rangiroa, Tuamotu. Like usual #BOATLIFE factors hardly ever go as planned.

Tikehau is only 45 nautical miles absent from Rangiroa but with sailing you can find so significantly much more to a journey than just a length. We have to leave Tikehau with enough light so we can see the bommies that threaten our route out of this atoll. We are sailing versus the wind and prevailing swell so it really is likely to be tough…which will slow us down.
We are sailing to just one of the most dangerous passes in the Tuamotu Archipelago. We ought to get there at slack tide or we are gonna die (at the very least that’s what all the ‘cautionary tales’ on the world-wide-web say).
Pile all these fear mongering tales with an remarkable begin of five+ knot recent pushing us out of Tikehau, then leading that with a busted starter causing our engine to fail and we now have an nervousness pie. What need to have been a wonderful, quick sail turned into a worry induced motor repair service bashing. Hooray Boats!
A single factors for sure, you can find hardly ever a dull instant in this sailing life of ours. In the stop we get the sour so we can savor the sweet…and Rangiroa is supposed to be just one of the very best places in the earth for SCUBA Diving Sailors like us.

disassemble starter and rotate the core then assemble and jump at starting selenoid
alphasxsignal August 13, 2019 10:26 pm
Carry extra starters in future. Starters don't last real long.

Wow! Way to storytell in your video. Even though we KNEW you were fine, we were on the edge of our seats. Well done. You set the standard for YT videos. Thank you!! (and really happy you got through those passes okay!)

Does the starter have brushes?

Try refueling with a 1" clear hose. Place one end of hose in Gerry Can the other in the tank. wrap fingers around Gerry can opening and hose. Blow into Gerry can through fingers as if you were giving "mouth to mouth." See the fuel start to siphon through the hose. No fuel on deck, no fuel on lips, no fuel on fingers. voila!

The problem may be the solenoid. The end w/the 2 heavy cables attached, has a ring that contacts them when the solenoid is energized. If you disassemble it, loosen the two locknuts on the posts, and put a shim behind each one (a piece of coiled-up #14 or smaller solid wire works well) and relighted, it might just work again.
Love your videos. Thanks!

I wish Americans would embrace Metric & Celsius like the rest of the world and Ive noticed Americans say "Sodder" instead of "Solder"

Leave the other motor running, remove the starter and put it on the other motor.
Twister 28 August 13, 2019 10:26 pm
err… 2 engines = 2 starter motors. If you're that desperate to make a window just take the motor off the running engine. yes you can do it whilst running. Just takes a little safety management. But really why not take it easy and sail for the next window. Zero stress.

Good tip for ya. Have a spare starter on board, vacuum wrap it like you would a fish filet. The next time you need it will be still like new no rust. I use my vacuum machine to wrap a lot of stuff on my boat.

I would push start it!

Love you guys, I've been following since way back in the RV days. The videos you post are stunning and bring me great joy. What would also bring me great joy is you guys wearing life jackets and tethers when the situation dictates, like rough seas while holding a 5 gallon 35 pound jerry can on a sugar scoop that is probably slick with algae. WTF!!! Shame on you and I am very disappointed. Love from Fate Texas.

great story telling guys. thoroughly enjoyed watching you work your way through a tough day. both cinematography and editing are well done.

Why donβt you carry spare parts of critical engines components? Also you might want to get the service manual for your engine.
Ross Edwards August 13, 2019 10:26 pm
Just FYI On most Diesal engines after you have started them you can remove the starter and put in on the other engine and start it. Both motor will run and stop just fine.
VintageTexas59 August 13, 2019 10:26 pm
The collector is toast…I would get some spare brushes (4) with a extra starter as well.
The banging on the starter is not a good thing by the way…can create more damage, crack the brushes, collector and wires…
Just my 2 cents working on electronics.
diverdan551 August 13, 2019 10:26 pm
Jason if you ever fall off the boat fueling up……Remember do not let go of the yellow/bright/fuel can, so Nikki can find you again!!!!! π …..It looks like you have been scolded enough today about not wearing a harness and vest…..So I won't be another to scold you at least today…….. LOL π
xwriter100 August 13, 2019 10:26 pm
I know Nikki didn't just wake up because her makeup was perfect! You're beautiful anyway so you don't have to play silly, we don't mind you au natural! π

I know what you mean about those cautionary tales (fear) and what they do to you. On the other hand, that is what also made you so focused on trying to get there during slack tide. It seems like it's always some game of walking the line between being educated but not overwhelmed. Well done!
