  2. Hey Guys, great video! We start our trip next year and i was wondering what phone/ internet plans did you go with… Do you just pick up ones locally or have you gone for something more like the Google plans that share off each countries signal and just have a monthly fee? Will you be in the med all of next year? Maybe we will cross paths at some point 🙂 Cheers anyway, Katelin & Andrew @anauticalchange

  3. You guys are awesome. Been enjoying your videos as they are quite grounded yet informative. Had a few sailing lessons living in Fuerteventura and long 3yr story later decided to bite the bullet. Many books and forums later bought my eBay boat in uk, 29.6ft mono just needing a survey now, don't suppose you know of any good surveyors in the Kent area?

  4. Thanks for sharing that. I was a little fooled by the prices and thought maybe the med was unattainable on a small budget. Thanks for opening my eyes. So many places to go.

  5. It's crazy how cheap life can get without rent, electricity, gas, etc., all gouging you. It's about what I'd hoped the costs would be, so it's nice to see it really works out that way. I'll be doing this around Ireland, but I'm hoping it's not too different.

  10. Great video! Thanks very much for sharing your costs! I'm planning to share our costs comparing last season to this season. We went about this season in a completely different way! 😀 This was one of the things we were worried about for next season! I wonder if people just share the rumours to keep as many cruisers away as possible so they can keep it to themselves…!! XD

  11. Hi Ryan & Elena, thank you once again for your efforts of putting your channel together! I really enjoy it!
I also wanted to contact you to let you know that in my latest video (Ep.15 was published tonight) I make mention of you 2 beautiful people at the end of that video with one of your pic's, along with some other boat build/sailing channels, and the reason is that in my next video I will be talking about "sacrifices",…..
I hope that you don't mind me mentioning you but if you do then please just let me know otherwise?
Keep on keeping on with your great project/S (X2 boats atm) and dreams!
    Thanks again! : )

  16. You guys are my new favourite sailing channel! I have a Catalac (you might have spotted it in the yard at Rota) and when I bought it in 2008 it was basically a toss up between a HT or a Catalac. I'd been pondering sailing the Med in 2019 but had been a bit put off by the myths you've outlined in this video, so thanks for clarifying 🙂

  25. Did you meet other cruisers in the med? I have sailed alone down the coast of Portugal this summer and meeting people along the way is a massive part of sailing alone for me, I have been told there are not many cruisers in the med? Is this true in your experience?

I just love you live your life. You explore nature rather than being drunk on the boat unconscious. This should be the main purpose while you cruise. I am from India, is it possible for me to join someone on boat like you are, for a month to cruise with. How much would I have to pay them maximum? Can you suggest please.

  31. I was surprised to see that food (non-restaurant) is the largest part of your budget. Perhaps this is an optical illusion because all of your other expenses are so low. I agree with your cruising philosophies for the most part, but I think I would spend a little more money on restaurants (depending on the available quality) and tours or other local cultural entertainments. I know you guys are hiking in the natural areas but I'd go in to the towns to experience the local flavor even if it meant spending a little more money.

  32. So glad you are sharing this information. It’s really interesting to see that you’re making it work on such a small budget. Kudos to you! I will be interested to know if this changes much with the new boat.

We only cruised the Western Med and agree with you… in some ways. Anchorages – yes you can find anchorages, especially in the islands (that was never a problem). But finding protected anchorages along the mainland coasts of Spain or France was not as easy. And that was our home base for the boat while we were traveling for work. We heard stories of Aduana or port / harbor masters telling boats they were not allowed to anchor, trying to push business to the marinas, I guess. As we had never experienced that ourselves, we remained skeptical. However, in one location where we were docked in southern Spain last year, we saw many boats chased into a marina from the anchorage after the Aduana motored through the anchorage on a loud speaker, telling everyone they must leave. And all this during a blow.

So, yes – you are correct. The Med doesn’t have to be expensive or break the bank for budget cruisers. But I also think a lot of it depends on the location within the Med and the size of the boat. For our catamaran, we are 10.8 meters in length and 6 meters in width. We would get charged 1.5 times (a couple of instances we were charged x2!) what a 35 foot monohull would be charged in a marina. So for us, it was expensive to go into marinas… but like everywhere in the world, that depends on the size of the boat. One thing we discovered (when booking a marina) booking for a month rather than a week or two can sometimes be cheaper. So it pays to ask for not only daily/weekly charge but monthly charge as well.

We found food/provisioning prices to be priced well and an abundance of options in Spain and France. It was more affordable to go out for an occasional meal in Spain for us, rather than in France. We have now learned that compared to the Caribbean, boat insurance was a heck of a lot cheaper in the Med. That was a crushing lesson.
