AWOL is a multi award winning yacht and her crew take a lot of pride in their work.

Captain’s Vlog is about educating interested parties on what happens onboard a Mega Yacht, Super Yacht and the yachting industry. To share the life of yacht crew and life at sea. The BIG shipyard refits, paint jobs and marine engineering works. To travel some of the worlds most beautiful destinations.

The first owner of the Super Yacht AWOL was non other than Mr Piero Ferrari himself. The wheel house still contains the original Captain’s chair with the Ferrari emblem.

  6. This series had me very interested in first 4 minutes. Once watched 2 Jet ski tour guides trying to fix a Jet ski for a solid 45 minutes, whilst on a tour. Later that day after the ski was towed back, there was not enough oil in engine as filler cap was missing, caused the engine to seize, bilge full of engine oil. Strongly agree basic maintenance knowledge would have diagnosed that problem in short order.

  7. I've been looking forward to this episode for a long time. As an instructor, motorcycle riding, I find your video of Bluewater very interesting. Nice to meet the coaches and see the chaps at the helm on watch!

  8. Excellent video, very informative. A bit more complicated than Park, Reverse, Neutral & Drive 😁

  9. Great video. Great channel. To eliminate flickering you should change video parameters from NTSC to PAL (60khz to 50khz) – this should help bettering the video quality while filming 🙂

  12. Great informative vid, I echo the views below but the length and cost of each course. I guess we can google Bluewater and find out for ourselves. However, from a Captains point of view, what are the best courses for someone to start with, if they just wish to be a deck hand/watchkeeper? I guess I can work that out but I'd like your personal view on it. Cheers from Oz! I love the name AWOL, I'm sure it means the same in all Defence Forces across the globe lol.

  13. Big hello to John Wybourne. I did my MCA 4 with john, Phil and Peter at Bluewater way back in 1998 in Antibes. The MCA tickets were pretty new then. We had to go to Graves End in UK to do radar and Marseille for FIre fighting. You’ve come a long way 🙂 Fantastic to see all you do now… wish we had that when i did my course. Tristan – Great informative videos I watch and reminisce on all of them.

  20. Thank YOU. If I was 40 years younger, I would seriously consider AEC 1 + 2. Cheers — PS – no flicker of picture here.
EDIT – Cost verses Investment. What if you could invest 60 hrs a week and $5G per semester. In 4 Sem – 2 yrs, you start work. Your Salary is $A. In 5 yrs – thru work and effort – you achieve $4A.

But you see the $ cost as a problem, and rather than educate yourself, your handy and get a job, in the Industry. For whatever reason, you don't find a good employer, but one who worries about $. You have been out talking to many, but they have more qualified applicants. You finally decide working is better than not working. You start at 1/5th of $A. You work a 40hr week, but because of not getting the education, you decide to spend you time looking and getting the info, to make you more valuable. You manage to last 4 yrs, because you were busy – and you convinced yourself, that you were learning. Even after 4 yrs, your only earning 1/2 $A. You again are looking for work, but you don't have the ticket. So you start again, New outfit – gives you the same 1/2 $A. But they can see your potential. You work another 3 yrs, and get to 3/4 $A. And this outfit has bigger equipment to work on, but you have to have the ticket – to move.
Add up the two scenarios and answer who has more $ in the bank. I am 58. I worked the #2 for 30 yrs. My employer was willing to train me, because I worked harder. Did not make it easy. I was not in this industry. But my skills, could have put me there. Looking back, with glasses to my 18yr old self, I would pick the Investment – and be damned with the cost. jmho. Do what you enjoy to do, and you will never "work" in your life. I did enjoy it!

  28. Second comment – I’m gutted I never knew of the career path or even the possibility of a career as a super yacht captain or chief engineer; if one thing demonstrates the influence the internet can deliver and it’s far reaching possibilities to inform and give direction it is videos like this

  29. The temptation to change career is strong with this one. No longer in my 20’s most definitely not tied down and quite fed up with the day to day grind.

  36. Interesting. I wander why only italians (as far as I know) use the much handier nautical squares (squadrette nautiche) for course tracking, taking bearings, instead of that clumsier ruler? I've talked with many collegues and some of them did not even know they existed and some had not idea how to use them.

  37. Great insight. When I finished my A-Levels I was nearly on the Sailing and Motor Yacht course at Weymouth University, the only thing that held me back was as always the cost unfortunate,
Great insight to the industry and the jobs involved as well as how to get in there.

    Thanks 🙂

  41. I dont own a gopro or something but is there a way to change frequency (fps) of the recording so to avoid the flickering we have here and with your new leds on AWOL? Doubling should do the trick😎
Edit: Hi Cap, here a good instruction vid on changing NTS setting to 50 hertz (PAL). Hope you see this 👌 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FIQKp4g9sAE
